Jesus’ Easy Yoke
Matthew 11:28-30 invites us to “take on Jesus’ easy yoke and learn from Him.
This illustration of a yoke comes from years ago (before the days of tractors) when farmers would use a piece of wood called a yoke to harness two oxen together. When two oxen are “yoked” together they have the capacity to pull a heavy load or plow a large field together. Often a farm would pair a younger, immature ox with an older wiser ox. Initially the younger ox might go too fast, too slow, or in his own direction. Overtime he’ll learn that if he keeps in step with the older ox that his work would become easier and more enjoyable.
So it is in a spiritual sense! As we “yoke” ourselves with Jesus and learn to work in step with him each day, we will find that our lives will become more fruitful and enjoyable. The Christian life was never meant for us to figure out on our own. We need the Holy Spirit to guide us!!
